The drive to the north was fun and uneventful. We were excited to see the Mackinaw Bridge in the distance.<\/p>\n<\/div> <\/p>\n\n\n\n We had chosen a seafood restaurant in Mackinaw City for lunch. We knew we would be close to the lakes, but did not expect that our turn would be the last road before the bridge.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n We had fish and chips for lunch at Scalawags Whitefish & Chips. It was delicious.<\/p>\n<\/div> After lunch, we toured Mackinaw City, the light house, the park and the beach. It was an enjoyable walk and a refreshing break from riding in the car. We were right at the place where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan meet, so we are not sure which lake is in which picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then we got back in the car and drove across the Mackinac Bridge. There was Lake Michigan to the left and Lake Huron to the right. At the end of the bridge, we reached the Upper Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first part of our drive across the peninsula provided great views of Lake Michigan. It is amazing to realize that somewhere about 300 miles to the south was the city of Chicago Illinois. With the right boat and enough fuel, you could take a boat ride to Chicago from here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Much of the drive across the upper Peninsula was straight roads with little traffic. About half way to Marquette, we took a turn to the north. After a few miles heading north, we turned west again toward Marquette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the north side of the Upper Peninsula, we got to see Lake Superior. It makes Lake Michigan seem small in comparison. Part of the Great Lakes lie in Canada. Even so, if the Great Lakes were a state, it would be the eleventh largest state in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n By the time we got to see Lake Superior, we were almost to Marquette Michigan. We had an enjoyable ride today on our way to our first national park for this trip, Isle Royale. We still have another day’s drive tomorrow to drive around Lake Superior to get close to Isle Royale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Today we drove from southern Michigan to the western side of the Upper Peninsula.
