<\/figure>Our plans were changed by the Governor of West Virginia. He decided late last week to declare July 3rd a state holiday, so the capitol was open, but tours were closed, and the capitol stamp was not available. Almost all doors were locked, so our self guided tour was quite short.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
This was as close as we got to seeing the Senate and House chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The dome interior is not as ornate as many capitols, but it is still very impressive. There was also a beautiful chandelier in another part of the capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most of the building appeared to be made of a single type of white marble. The effect was dramatic and quite bright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The decorations in the ceiling had many flower patterns. The carvings on the walls were equally diverse and interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here is a picture of the front of the capitol and one of the monuments on the capitol grounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The most unique sighting at the capitol was a black squirrel with an orange tail.<\/p>\n<\/div> We did notice that Charleston, WV has added artwork to the freeway supports in order to beautify the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The drive home from Charleston was over some very nice country highways that we had traveled before. In spite of some bad weather, the trip was nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After 26 days on the road, it was good to see North Carolina on the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We enjoyed our tour of the Midwest.
