May 19, 2022 : Trip 6, Day 6 – More Great Sand Dunes

The first hike today was over the Mosca Pass from Great Sand Dunes to the next valley.

The trail was fairly steep. The part we hiked rose 450 feet in three quarters of a mile.

We hiked as far as the top of the pass.

We had not planned to hike the entire trail. When we saw the view at the top of the pass, we knew it was time to turn back

This was the view of the dunes at the top of the pass.

After we completed our return on Mosca pass, we transitioned to the Wellington Ditch Trail. This trail provides excellent views of the dunes.

One of the first things we saw was the 300 acres of fire damage that had occurred overnight.

This picture was not taken at an angle. In drier areas, plants grow however they can, where ever they can

From the Wellington Ditch Trail you get an excellent view of how the mountains provide a backdrop for the formation of the dunes.

The Wellington Ditch Trail is rocky, but level. On its own, it is an easy hike.

When the Wellington Ditch Trail is combined with the Mosca Pass and a hike to the car, the trip became too long. This picture was taken by Marlene as Steve finished the last half mile to get the car to pick her up.

When we were both in the car, we were on the road to Gunnison, Colorado.

There were more mountains to see,

and more roads to travel.

What a great way to enjoy God’s creation!
