Today we had a different drive than Skyline Drive. We traveled from Edgewood, Maryland to Newport, Rhode Island. Our drive went well until we got to the George Washington Bridge. As we were approaching the bridge, traffic backed up quickly. Google suggested another route so we took it. Things went downhill from there. Most of the rest of the trip to Newport was traffic and more traffic. Instead of following Interstate 95 from New York City to Newport, we ended up on numerous parkways, backroads, and city streets. We have no way to know if we saved any time, but it did not feel like it.
Once we finally got to Newport, the Cliff Walk was fun and relaxing. The beach, the cliffs and the mansions were very enjoyable.
Cliff Walk sign at 40 Steps
We started at a place called 40 Steps. It is forty steps from the road down to the Cliff Walk. Forty different donors sponsored the walk with their donations. The trail is full of wonderful views.
In front of the cliffs and surrounded by them.
We also caught a nice view of the other side of the bay when looking through some of the trees at the top of the cliff.
The view across the bay.
There were also many large homes and mansions on the walk. We saw only about half of the homes on the cliff walk. Some of the mansions had been rehabbed as non profits and businesses.
After we completed the Cliff Walk, we drove to Seekonk, Massachusetts. It was interesting to spend a night right at the state line. We crossed over between Rhode Island and Massachusetts several times in our short stay.
We bought our dinner at Zoe’s Pizza, a local Italian restaurant in Providence, Rhode Island. Our order was one eggplant dinner and one chicken parmesan dinner to go. While we waited for our food we had a great conversation with the owner and the staff. We got a lot of food. The bill was $20. We had three tasty meals from that one order, and we did not even finish all the food. All in all it was a fun time and a great deal.
