March 15, 2023 : Trip 9, Day 1 – Visiting The Ohio Capitol

Today we begin a quick six day trip to Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, and West Virginia. It is a beautiful day for traveling.

When we got to the mountains, the day was still clear, but the temperature was dropping. We saw some snow in the mountains.

We stopped in Charleston, West Virginia for some barbeque. They prepare it by smoking. The ribs and the sandwich were very good. We will be back here at the end of our trip.

From Charleston, we drove directly to the Ohio Statehouse. It was sunny, but quite cool. The outside view of the Statehouse is a little different because there is a rotunda rather than a dome. Inside you can see that there is a dome hidden by the rotunda.

From where we entered the building, it was a relatively plain doorway, but unlike most capitol buildings, there was a labeled entrance.

The House Chamber could only be viewed from the gallery. The room is very well appointed with wooden desks. They used laptops, but did not have the big screens seen in many capitols.

The Senate Chamber provided access to the Senate floor. The overall appearance is very similar to the house , but the desks are bigger and fancier.

The interior spaces were a combination of stone and marble. The black and white floor has an op art flair.

The office portion of the building is finished in a manner consistent with most capitols.

There are many fancy details throughout the building most are wood or plaster looking finishes.

Here is a view of the hidden dome.

There was a very nice Civil War Memorial inside the statehouse.

A small museum about Ohio government is housed in the Statehouse. The state seal reflects the agricultural basis of the Ohio economy.

Most capitols have war memorials on their grounds. The memorial at the Ohio Statehouse is unique. They have carved into the marble letters sent home from war. It gave a much more personal feel to see how men at war had expressed their emotions to their families.

There is also an intricate three dimensional collage and sculpture that honors educators.

The tour of the Ohio Statehouse was an interesting afternoon tour. After the tour, we traveled to Dayton Ohio to be ready for a museum visit tomorrow.
