July 26, 2023 : Trip 11, Day 2 – Mount St Helens National Monument

Our drive to Mount St Helens was a nice ride.

It is weird to see a mountain with a large portion of its top missing. Mount St Helens is significantly shorter than it was before it blew its top.

One result of the the eruption was a beautiful new lake.

Another impact on the area is an extensive area of lava flow for many miles from the volcano.

In the last forty years, much of the area has recovered. The landscape is very different, but the plant and animal life have returned more quickly than was expected.

We were not able to see all the places we wanted to see because of recent mudslides and other instabilities in the area. While the volcano is relatively quiet, the earth is not as stable as we like to believe it is.
