August 20, 2023 : Trip 11, Day 27 – Drive to Boise ID

Today was a long rainy day drive from Grand Teton National Park to Boise Idaho.

We took a picture of one of the mountains in the Grand Tetons to show how rainy and cloudy it was. This was near Jenny Lake.

We crossed over a steep mountain pass in Wyoming to get to Idaho while still in the same storm. Then we took some back roads from the Idaho border to Idaho Falls.

From Idaho Falls we took route 20 for about 210 miles to get to Mountain Home. We do not usually include blurry pictures in our blog, but today it was appropriate. Just outside of Idaho Falls we saw a sign that said INL, Idaho National Laboratory. For much of the trip across route 20, we saw almost no buildings. There is one picture here of a small building that we saw. We also saw many places with large machinery burying huge quantities of fiber optic cable. Beyond that, we saw miles and miles of empty land.

A quick search about INL said they have a 900 square mile facility in eastern Idaho that does research about nuclear energy.

The rainy day, the huge laboratory area, lots of data lines being installed, and little information gave us an eerie feeling of another Area 51. It is probably a nuclear research facility that does a variety of projects in the outback of Idaho.

Either way, we were happy to safely cross the area and get to Boise Idaho with no difficulty.
